This article explains practical steps you can take before, during, and after a hurricane or tropical storm. It also shows where do-it-yourself preparation ends and professional electrical help should begin.
How Hurricanes Can Affect Your Home’s Electrical System
A hurricane does not need to make a direct hit to create electrical problems. Wind, rain, lightning, and utility disruptions can affect your home in different ways.
- Power surges can enter through utility lines when lightning strikes nearby, equipment fails, or the electric grid switches power during restoration.
- Falling trees and windblown debris can damage overhead service lines, the weatherhead, meter equipment, outdoor disconnects, or exterior wiring.
- Floodwater can reach receptacles, wiring, appliances, HVAC equipment, generators, and electrical panels.

Do not shut off the main breaker simply because rain or wind has started. Follow instructions from emergency officials or your utility. If water has already reached the panel or you must stand in water to access electrical equipment, stay away. 2. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Test every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm before hurricane season and at least monthly afterward. Replace batteries when needed, and confirm that alarms with battery backup still operate during a power outage. A plug-in surge strip protects only the devices connected to it, and not every power strip provides surge protection. Check the label before you rely on one. No surge protector can promise protection from every event, including a direct lightning strike. Still, layered protection can reduce risk. Use a properly installed whole-home device, quality point-of-use protectors for sensitive electronics, and data-line protection where appropriate.
4. Unplug Sensitive Devices When Conditions Allow
Before the storm arrives, unplug computers, televisions, gaming systems, small appliances, chargers, and other nonessential electronics. Do not wait until lightning is overhead, and never handle plugs or equipment with wet hands. Leave refrigerators and freezers connected unless officials advise otherwise or you need to evacuate and your emergency plan calls for a full shutdown.
Take a photo of your electrical panel, meter, major appliances, generator, and valuable electronics while everything remains dry and intact. These images can help you document equipment and model information if you later need to contact a repair professional or insurance carrier.
5. Decide How You Will Power Essential Equipment
List the items your household truly needs during an outage. Refrigeration, medical equipment, sump pumps, well pumps, communication devices, and limited lighting often come first. Then decide whether battery backup, a portable generator, or a permanently installed standby generator fits those needs.
Plan before you buy. Generator capacity, fuel, placement, extension cords, grounding requirements, and connection methods all matter. A licensed electrician can also explain whether a transfer switch or approved interlock system fits your electrical panel and local requirements.
6. Check Outdoor Electrical Equipment
Walk around the property before the weather worsens. Secure loose objects that could strike the meter, service equipment, outdoor receptacles, lighting, HVAC equipment, or a generator enclosure. The CPSC advises homeowners to run portable generators outdoors only, at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors, and vents.
- Never operate a generator in a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, enclosed porch, or carport (even with doors or windows open).
- Keep the generator dry and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wet-weather operation. Never use or refuel it with wet hands.
- Let the generator cool before adding fuel. Store fuel in approved containers away from living spaces and ignition sources.
- Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords that match the connected load. Inspect cords for cuts, crushed areas, missing ground pins, or damaged plugs.
- Connect the generator to the home only through properly installed transfer equipment. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet, dryer receptacle, or other household circuit.
- Keep working carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas. If an alarm sounds or anyone develops possible carbon monoxide symptoms, get outside immediately and call 911.
Why back-feeding is dangerous: Plugging a generator into a household outlet can energize wiring beyond your home. That power can injure family members, neighbors, electricians, or utility crews working to restore service. A transfer switch or approved interlock separates generator power from utility power and provides a safer connection point.
When the Power Returns: Restore Loads Gradually
Power restoration does not always happen in one smooth step. Brief interruptions and voltage changes can occur while the utility repairs the system. Therefore, keep nonessential appliances and electronics unplugged until service appears stable and officials say conditions are safe.
Turn items back on gradually instead of starting every large load at once. Begin with essential equipment, then reconnect other appliances and electronics over several minutes. Check surge protectors for status lights or damage before relying on them again.
Discard refrigerated or frozen food based on public-health guidance, not appearance or smell alone. Electrical safety and food safety overlap during a long outage, so monitor appliance temperatures with thermometers if possible.
After the Storm: Inspect Before You Reset or Reconnect
Wait for local officials to confirm that travel and reentry are safe. Before you enter the property, look for fallen lines, a damaged service mast or weatherhead, a pulled meter base, leaning utility poles, broken tree limbs, and standing water near electrical equipment.
Inside the home, use your senses without touching questionable equipment.
