National Electrical Safety Month: Protect Your Home from Hazards and Fires

May is National Electrical Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of electrical safety in our homes. Every year, 51,000 house fires and 1,400 injuries occur due to electrical hazards that could have been prevented with proper precautions. As homeowners, it’s crucial to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding our homes against potential risks.

To keep you and your family safe from electrical hazards and house fires, here are 5 tips that can help prevent potential dangers:

Regularly Inspect Smoke & Carbon Detectors

Smoke detectors are your first line of defense against fires. Make sure you have smoke detectors installed in key areas of your home, such as bedrooms, hallways, and the kitchen.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly to ensure they are functioning correctly, and replace batteries at least once a year. Additionally, consider upgrading to interconnected smoke detectors if you don’t have them, so that if one alarm goes off, they all sound, providing early warning in case of fire.

We use and recommend First Alert alarms to all our customers.

Check Your Outlets & Switches

Faulty outlets and switches are common culprits of electrical fires. Regularly inspect your outlets and switches for signs of wear, damage, or overheating. Loose outlets, flickering lights, or sparks when plugging in appliances are all warning signs that need immediate attention. Replace any damaged or outdated outlets and switches promptly, and consider installing tamper-resistant outlets to protect children from electrical shocks.

Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs)

GFCIs are critical for protecting against electrical shocks, especially in areas with water, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor outlets. These devices monitor the flow of electricity and can quickly shut off power if they detect a ground fault or imbalance.

Test your GFCIs monthly by pressing the “test” button and ensuring they trip properly. If your home doesn’t have GFCIs installed, consider hiring a licensed electrician to retrofit them for added safety.

Use Extension Cords Safely

While extension cords are convenient for powering devices in hard-to-reach areas, they can also pose significant risks if not used properly. Avoid overloading extension cords by plugging in too many appliances or devices at once, as this can lead to overheating and fires. Choose extension cords that are rated for the intended use and length needed, and never run them under rugs or carpets where they can become damaged or create a tripping hazard. Whenever possible, opt for permanent wiring solutions instead of relying on extension cords for long-term use.

Maintain Your Electrical Panel

Your home’s electrical panel is the heart of your home’s electrical system, distributing power to various circuits throughout the house. Ensure that your panel is properly labeled, and familiarize yourself with which breakers control each area of your home.

If you experience frequent tripped breakers or notice signs of overheating, such as a burning smell or discolored breakers, contact a licensed electrician immediately to inspect and repair any issues. Consider scheduling regular maintenance checks for your electrical panel to catch potential problems before they escalate.

Warning: If you live in a home built before 1990 and have a Zinsco (GTE-Sylvania), Federal Pacific Electric (FPE), Challenger (Eaton/Cutler Hammer), or Pushmatic Bulldog Electrical Panel, please consider replacing them as soon as possible. These electrical panels are outdated, unsafe, can cause a house fire, and lack the safeguards of modern electrical panels.

By following these five tips, you can help protect your home and loved ones from electrical hazards and the devastating consequences of house fires. Remember, electrical safety is a responsibility we all share, and taking proactive measures today can prevent accidents tomorrow. When in doubt, hire a licensed electrician to perform a home electrical inspection. Stay safe, stay informed, and prioritize electrical safety in your home during electrical safety month, and beyond.
